My research is my learning resource

This year I had the opportunity to study alongside the Umar Harun Islamic School Kindergarten B class. His age is between 5 until 6 year. Learning in our school is research-based, with the hope that students can learn contextually and deeply and develop their critical thinking patterns.

As a learning companion, I hope that students can contribute to solving problems in the surrounding environment.

It turns out, mereka menemukan sampah yang berserakan dimana-mana. Tak hanya menyebutkan temuan-temuannya terkait sampah, mereka juga menyebutkan dampak buruk dari sampah berserakankalo buang sampah sembarangan nanti jadi gunung sampah Bu, nanti bisa banjir, nanti banyak semutmereka saling bersahutan. Untuk memperdalam pengetahuan tentang sampah, cara pengolahan dan dampak buruk membuang sampah sembarangan, they conducted observations and interviews at the Al-Anwar Waste Management Center 3, Nest.

They were very enthusiastic about asking questions and discussing with the resource persons. There, they learn about different kinds of garbage (organic and non-organic) along with how to process it. All waste is sorted according to type, to make processing easier. For non-organic hard plastic waste, Later it will be chopped in a chopping machine. Meanwhile, soft plastic waste, will be burned in a special place. The ash resulting from the burning is reprocessed into paving. Very cool, turning dirty and useless items into products that can be used. Meanwhile, organic waste is usually used as food for livestock, like chickens and ducks.

Apart from finding environmental cleanliness problems, Students are also invited to discover and be aware of problems related to personal hygiene. Like long, dirty nails, walk on the ground barefoot, not washing hands before eating. Students collect personal hygiene data in each class. They checked the students and teachers one by one. It turns out that there are many findings about students' lack of awareness in maintaining personal hygiene. To dig up more detailed information, they conducted an interview with one of the parents of TK B Islam Umar Harun who works as a pharmacist. Mereka belajar macam-macam cara menjaga kebersihan diri, such as cutting nails and bathing routinely, wash hands and feet after playing, wash hands before and after eating. Besides that, They also learn to know the bad effects of not maintaining personal hygiene. By using interesting learning media, The students were enthusiastic and active in discussing.

Interesting, mereka mampu menyampaikan informasi dan data-data hasil wawancara terkait menjaga kebersihan diri dan lingkungan dengan detail dan bahasa yang memahamkan. This proves the extent of understanding gained during the interview process.

The data and information obtained are then analyzed. Then narrow down the results of the analysis into solution ideas in the form of research projects and products. There are three types of research projects that students can choose from, namely drawing research, coloring and creating stories. From these research choices, Students also have diverse research products. Among them are posters, kaos, background photo booth, and picture story books. Although the research and product choices vary, but they all have the same goal, namely campaigning for movements to maintain personal and environmental cleanliness. The target is all members of the Umar Harun Islamic School. Every student has the opportunity to carry out research trials repeatedly without forgetting to reflect.

As for students who choose drawing and coloring research, they first determine the objects that will be used for testing and the final product. The objects chosen are of course related to the research theme of maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness. Meanwhile, students who choose research create stories, The theme of the story is also about maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness. After going through a series of trials, followed by presentation of test results and reflections.

Not just a presentation, Even the research products were also campaigned to members of the Umar Harun Islamic School. Some are campaigning through posters, t-shirts and photo booth backgrounds designed with images inviting you to maintain personal and environmental cleanliness. There are also campaigns through picture story books which are also sold. The hope is that more and more people will be provoked to maintain cleanliness.

Through a series and stages of research learning, Students are more sensitive to personal and environmental hygiene. Spirit of reminding parents, friends or even teachers who don't maintain cleanliness. “Wash your hands first, I want to eat.” “That, do not litter. Keep clean”. I often hear sentences like that from Kindergarten B students.

They are also more enthusiastic about implementing waste sorting by throwing rubbish in the right place according to its category. Duh, this makes my heart happy. Children their age can contribute to solving problems in their environment and inviting other people to make good changes. I feel that project-based learning is very effective and impactful. Because students are directly involved in every process, four of them were invited to explore the environment by identifying and understanding existing problems, then determine a solution. So that from an early age children are used to solving problems.
