I teach at SMPN 5 Sekadau Hilir. The school is located in the city of Sekadau, precisely on the edge of the Kapuas River. To go to school, I had to cross the river using a water motorbike which is usually called a klotok motorbike. The distance from my house to school is about forty-five minutes. So that I don't arrive late at school when it starts at 7, I left home at 6:10 minute. My school is a large school with as many students as there are 240 people. The number of teachers in our school is quite large, namely 16 people and complete with a number of subjects at school. I am a teacher who covers the field of English studies. For the academic year 2023/2024 I was entrusted by the school principal as a class VIII C guardian. The independent curriculum emphasizes students' literacy and numeracy-based learning. Therefore, I really want to improve students' literacy skills..
CHALLENGE
Literacy or reading awareness at my school is very lacking, This can be seen from the visit books in the library which are not filled enough. They rarely come to the library because they only have short breaks or there are very few interesting reading books available for them. Therefore, I took the initiative to create a reading corner in the classroom. With expectations, they can read in their free time.
ACTION
What is done to design a comfortable and attractive reading corner, I invite students to discuss creating a reading corner. I explained what a reading corner is? I asked them to look for examples of reading corners through social media. After they get an example of a reading corner, then they observe, imitate and modify according to their wishes. In creating a reading corner, integrated with the Pancasila student profile, namely mutual cooperation,creative and critical reasoning. The process of creating a reading corner was carried out on Saturday, where they complete extracurricular activities, they together create a reading corner. They start by arranging where they will position the reading corner. Then they bring books from home or ask them to the school library and arrange them on the bookshelves that their friends have made.
LESSON
The lesson that can be taken from this activity is the increased positive impact between students in the form of cooperation, creative, critical reasoning and students' interest in reading.
