Action as the Best Experience

So that the learning carried out can be successful, There are many efforts that can be done by educators, including setting good goals, adequate media, organize evaluations, determine learning methods and so on. Teachers must always have new ideas, smart ideas which are carried out continuously and seriously to provide effective and meaningful learning in their classes..

The “peer tutoring in groups” method is a learning activity that involves student activity, where students with higher abilities can help other students who do not understand the material in a group. The learning atmosphere was enjoyable. An atmosphere of familiarity with friends will help students be more able to accept the material so that understanding of the learning material will be achieved quickly. Peer tutoring activities are chosen to be carried out in groups to make it easier to analyze students who do not understand the material. Carried out in groups of members 1 tutor as the person responsible for 4 other students as “students”. The emphasis of this activity is that students understand the learning material by being taught by their peers, the atmosphere is pleasant, and full of intimacy, but it does not reduce the substance of the learning itself. This means that after participating in this activity there is a change in the behavior of the students towards a positive direction.

The choice of peer tutoring activities in learning is considered more effective for reasons:

  1. The peer tutoring method is an activity full of intimacy. Students learn by establishing intimate communication in groups. A friendly atmosphere is very good for learning to take place.
  2. The peer tutoring method in groups is an interesting activity for students. Indications are that student interest in this activity is very high.
  3. The peer tutoring method carried out in groups provides good social life training for students. Students can develop positive social attitudes, for example, an attitude of cooperation with friends in solving problems.
  4. Fun peer mentor activities provide a positive psychological influence on students in participating in learning. Develop competitive power because there is a reward at the end of the assessment for the best group.
  5. The peer tutoring method in groups which is carried out in a fun way will minimize feelings of boredom in learning.
  6. Peer tutoring method in groups that provides experience to practice being a leader for students who act as tutors and practice being a person who is led by students who are members of their group.
  7. The peer tutoring method in groups is a learning activity. It is said to be a learning activity because after participating in this activity there is a change in behavior in the students, that is, students can learn the questions that will be USBNized, In the end, students who don't understand will be able to solve the questions without the help of a tutor.

Results Achieved

Selection of peer tutoring methods in groups to prepare class VI students at SDN Kesamben II to face the USBN academic year 2018/ 2019, has a positive impact on several things, among others:

  1. Increase students' interest in learning.

Choosing the peer tutoring method in groups has the impact of increasing students' interest in learning. In the peer tutoring method, students are given an interesting activity in groups, Don't just receive one-way information, making students bored, low interest in learning, However, in this activity students are positioned as subjects. Students in their groups have different roles, one student as a tutor and another student as the person being taught, thus causing his interest in learning to increase.

  1. Increase student learning motivation

Peer tutoring method in groups that provides direct learning experiences, real and challenging, making students' learning motivation higher regarding the questions that may appear in the National Standard School Examination (UASBN).

  1. Foster an attitude of cooperation

The peer tutoring method in groups will foster and train good cooperation between students who are tutors and students who are members of the group. In this activity, students in groups must really work together so that the students who are tutors don't mind teaching their friends in the group.

  1. Increase understanding of learning material and learning outcomes

The peer tutoring method in groups provides direction for students to test their ability to solve example problems. Delivery of material is more easily accepted by other friends because it uses their everyday language. By carrying out this activity, it is hoped that student learning outcomes will improve individually and in groups, even classically. Learning outcomes increase individually if each student gets a minimum score equal to the KKM or teacher's target. Students' grades increased as a group, if all five students in the group have good grades. Meanwhile, classically, if the average of students in one class improves or is better than the previous exercise.

At the end of the school year 2018/2019 Class VI students at SDN Kesamben II obtained an average student score of 82,22. With a class average of 82,22 ranks first in the ranking in the Kesamben District area which consists of 26 Public and Private Elementary Schools.

Discussion of the Results Obtained

Teachers in choosing peer tutoring methods in groups to increase the average USBN score in class VI at SDN Kesamben II, Kesamben District, Jombang Regency, also encountered several obstacles. These obstacles include, among others:

  1. Students who are selected as peer tutors and perform well do not necessarily have a good relationship with the students they are helping, so teachers must know the characteristics of each student in determining groups.
  2. Students selected as peer tutors may not necessarily be able to convey the material well, so teachers must really train peer tutors specifically to deepen the material and how to complete material that is considered difficult by peer tutors.
  3. Students who are helped often study less seriously because they feel they are only dealing with their friends. In motivating each group, then the teacher prepares reward for each group that has the highest average value. With reward It is hoped that group members will motivate each other.
  4. High responsibility in the group results in fraud, namely, The tutor and other group members work together to work on practice questions which are used as the basis for the teacher's assessment. In this case, the teacher gets around this by giving different questions to each group member.

Apart from a number of obstacles faced by sixth grade teachers in choosing the peer tutoring method in groups, There are also supporting factors for this activity. The supporting factors include::

  1. Students who act as tutors will feel challenged in managing their groups because tutors feel responsible and proud of their duties.
  2. Most students are very enthusiastic about the peer tutoring method in groups, because the activities are carried out with peers as "teachers", thus allowing for a learning situation that is full of familiarity as well as challenges for the group in learning activities.
  3. UASBN question grid available, so that teachers can create appropriate and varied questions as practice for the UASBN. The tutor in the group directs group members to create and answer questions for each other based on the grid.
  4. The school as a work unit, through the Principal, strongly supports peer tutoring activities in this group, by providing facilities and support for this activity to take place. One form of support provided by the Principal, willing to wait for class VI when the class VI teacher is unable to carry out learning assignments.

The use of the lecture method in learning USBN subject material in class VI of SDN Kesamben II, Kesamben District, Jombang Regency has proven to be less successful., makes learning less interesting and has an impact on students' understanding of the learning material less than optimally. So teachers look for other methods that can improve student learning outcomes.

Constraint- Obstacles in implementing the peer tutoring method can be overcome with supporting factors. The peer tutoring method in groups optimizes the peer tutoring method in general. By dividing into groups, it means that the tutor is more focused on the small number of "students" and can understand the characteristics of each so that an increase in students' understanding of the material can be achieved.. This led to the success of SDN Kesamben II in obtaining the best average class score at the Kesamben District level this year 2018/2019.
