Early
The initial condition that I faced in this practice was the difficulty of disciplining students in obeying school rules or class agreements. Almost every day I remind students about the same thing, but two or three days later the student made the same mistake again. Persuasive communication strategy, delivery firmly, I often even carry out punishments, but the changes are only visible for a day or two, After that the students return to do the same thing. After two months there was no change, I tried the strategy I called “Let them Feel, Let them Fail” where I complied with the student's request, then let them do things that are not in accordance with the rules / class agreement. I do this with the hope that when they make repeated mistakes/violations without being reprimanded, one day the student will realize his mistake, and understand from their subconscious mind that what they are doing is not right. When students feel they have realized their mistakes, then I carried out persuasive communication.
CHALLENGE
Allowing students to do wrong things repeatedly without being reprimanded will of course bring various cons, either from parents/guardians of students, fellow teachers, or even the principal. Explaining it is certainly not easy, Moreover, this strategy was initially only “try try”, a strategy that emerged from my despair when I saw no change in the student's character even though I had practiced all the methods. Another challenge is that changes in student character cannot be seen in a short time, because this strategy takes weeks or even months to see results.
ACTION
Strategy “Let them Feel, Let them Fail” namely strategies that let students feel, and allow students to make mistakes and then understand them after the students realize their mistakes. Leaving here does not immediately mean that I am ignoring the students, but by still supervising and giving instructions to students.
I first applied this strategy to students' habits, where every time they were given an assignment, students always competed and often even fought to gather at the teacher's table. Starting from that, I made a deal with the student, that every Thursday and Saturday, they can position the table and sit where they want. A week goes by they look happy because they feel “obeyed”, In the second week, various problems and feuds emerged between students, but I still let it go and just watched them. And finally in the third week, Some children started to become aware and suggested that table arrangements and sitting positions should be arranged properly and not at the whim of the students. Then I asked all the students, They also agreed to no longer sit fighting around the teacher's desk. That's where I started advising them about the importance of good organization in the classroom.
Next, I apply it to the habits of students who have difficulty concentrating and have difficulty remembering and are even indifferent to the delivery delivered by the teacher in class because they are used to delivery through class groups.. Since the emergence of Covid-19, where at that time students studied online, and all information is generally conveyed via online group chat, In my opinion, this is one of the factors that hinders children's ability to receive information. I also made an agreement with the students that everything about learning was only conveyed in class. For the first month to two months, I saw that students still had difficulty remembering what was delivered in class. It is not uncommon for learning to be postponed many times because students forget to bring books/tools and materials that will be used in class. Even several times the student's parents called to ask about the assignments given. But it's getting longer, I see that students' ability to receive information is getting better, In fact, several times it was the students who actually reminded me about previous learning.
After seeing the success of this strategy, I began to apply it to all learning practices that emphasized strengthening student character.
CHANGE
The results I got from implementing this good practice are::
- Real changes in student behavior in a positive direction. Even though it takes a long time, the changes are very satisfying, students no longer commit violations, and the teacher does not need to remind you every day regarding class rules/agreements.
- Students are able to make their own decisions with more confidence. Although the initial purpose of this strategy is only to discipline students, However, I see that implementing this strategy also has a positive effect on students' ability to make decisions.
- Students are wiser in various ways
- By letting students try what they want to do, Students are more expressive and able to express opinions openly
- Students are more open in responding “failure” because he often makes mistakes and realizes his own mistakes.
