Good practice elaboration

As a Guidance and Counseling teacher (BK) I often provide classical services by joining classes to provide important information that is relevant to personal development, social, students' learning and careers. This classical service is part of the many types of services that can be provided by a guidance and counseling teacher. When interacting with students in class through discussions and questions and answers, It turns out that there are some students who are communicative ,have good communication competence, I like helping friends in solving problems and am very interested in counseling services which I always socialize as a form of guidance and counseling service intended for students who want help in solving the problems they are experiencing.. Finally, I took the initiative, what if I empowered students who had these competencies to become peer counselors.

Peer counselors, especially in public high schools 8 Makassar was initially launched for the first time in 2016 by the Population Control and Family Planning Service (PPKB Service or previously known as BKKBN) in one of its programs for several schools to provide special training to students to become peer counselors in the Youth Information and Counseling Center organization (PIK-teen) . As time goes by, students who have been provided with training to become peer counselors graduate , Several years later, I finally took the initiative to create a school program aimed at fostering an independent attitude, Creative and critical thinking through the peer counselor program. Through this activity, I really hope for the students who become peer counselors and the students who become their counselors and for all students at school so that they can overcome the problems they face which can hinder them from developing their potential..

Ada 2 the basic concept of why I developed this peer counselor program. First, a peer counselor is an individual who provides assistance to other people of the same age so they can overcome their problems. The relationships that exist are interpersonal and carried out by non-professionals. Peer relationships have a strong role in the lives of teenagers. Peer relationships create a relationship of mutual trust between peers. This relationship can give rise to behavior where teenagers trust their peers more than their parents or teachers . So the formation and training of peer counselors can be the right choice in an effort to protect children or teenagers from negative environmental influences, The second concept of peer counselors in schools is students who are able to help socialize the role and function of counseling guidance, have a desire to improve self-competence (positive personality) to become a counselor, help solve peer problems through counseling activities. The requirements to become a peer counselor are as follows: Has a genuine interest in helping his peers, Be open to other people's opinions , Appreciate and respect the client , Be sensitive to people's feelings and empathize , Have a strong sense of stability and self-control, Can build good relationships, Have the ability to be an active listener and sensitive to other people's feelings. All of these requirements can be developed in peer counselor training.

After carrying out a data collection process for students who are talented and interested in becoming peer counselors, The next step is to hold peer counselor training until finally a community of peer counselors is formed which I facilitate in the BK room . After preparing a work program and task schedule, they begin to carry out counseling activities through mentoring, my direction and control . I feel very helped by them because they really carry out the counseling process well for their friends who need it, Apart from that, there was also an increase in the number of students who wanted to express their problems by coming alone without being called to the guidance and counseling room, and enthusiastically, some students wanted to join as peer counselors after they saw the counseling process activities carried out by the peer counselors.

At the beginning of the activity there were several obstacles that arose, including the students who served as peer counselors no longer had rest hours because the counseling process often used rest time. , The counseling process tends to take a long time, so it often goes past break time, and the counselor and counselee end up being late to study, and finally receive a warning from the subject teacher who teaches in their class., There is a tendency for teachers not to give permission for students to leave the classroom to carry out the counseling process while teaching, The guidance and counseling room becomes crowded because students' enthusiasm for counseling increases. The steps taken to overcome this problem are that apart from the rest hours used for counseling, there are free hours. (empty hours) be the alternative schedule, Apart from that, students who are on duty for one day are encouraged to help each other and work together so that they still have time to rest. To make effective use of time, there needs to be an agreement/commitment that regulates and, if possible, the counseling process is carried out in stages ( It doesn't have to be completed in one meeting) regarding teachers who tend not to give students permission to continue communicating and collaborating until they understand the need for cooperation and mutual understanding, and in the case of tight space, the alternative is to provide counseling services not only done indoors but if possible, done outside the room, such as on the classroom terrace., under the tree , in the school mosque and/or in the school library(conditioned). Every week I reflect on this activity with the peer counselor and report on the progress of this peer counselor activity during meetings / meeting between school principals, vice principal, teachers and educational staff.

The peer counselor program has had a very positive impact on me as a guidance and counseling teacher and in the public high school environment 8 Makassar in general, as well as to students involved in providing counseling services and finally there was a significant change in the provision of guidance and counseling services which were initially problem-based (Counseling services are provided only to students with problems) Finally, all students can be touched by guidance and counseling services, both providing services aimed at prevention, Development / development or for alleviation/curative purposes. Initially, only guidance and counseling teachers could be chosen by students to consult. Finally, there was an alternative choice, namely students who wanted to express and resolve their problems could choose one of their peer counselors who they thought could and could become their counselor..

After being formed and given assignments , The response from students who became peer counselors was extraordinary, they started to learn more and communicate actively with me about many things in dealing with their friends' attitudes when giving counseling so that they were very enthusiastic about making changes within themselves., they begin to plan and develop an independent attitude, be creative and think critically so that they are more confident in providing assistance and being partners in solving problems faced by their friends (his counselee). The changes that occurred after the formation of peer counselors did not only occur in students who became counselors, but students who received peer counseling services also looked more enthusiastic and did not seem awkward and hesitant in revealing what their problems were, especially learning and friendship problems., so that they felt their burden was reduced and several students expressed that in the peer counseling they had received alternative solutions to their problems . In the initial process until the final process counseling is created student Agency where each student feels responsible , choice and ownership of the implementation of this activity. The lessons and benefits that teachers get related to the actions in this peer counselor program include: ; BK teachers will be greatly helped in providing comprehensive services, consistent and continuous for all students in schools, which initially could only provide services to certain students, but with the existence of peer counselors, all students can be touched by guidance and counseling services., Through peer counselors, guidance and counseling teachers also get broader and more accurate information about the attitudes or behaviors carried out by students in class.. subject teacher (subject teacher) can easily provide information about students who are having problems while teaching a class by contacting peer counselors in the class who need to be provided with guidance or counseling services, without having to contact the guidance and counseling teacher, subject teachers will also feel calm, comfortable and happy teaching in class if the students do not cause problems.

I hope that the good practices that I have implemented can inspire my fellow BK teachers wherever they work, Let's maximize and liberate students in providing guidance and counseling services that suit their needs so that there are no more students who act outside the boundaries because they don't have a place to reveal and help alleviate the problems they are experiencing.. Thank you #TeacherBKCaresStudents
