Learn to be democratic and develop students' leadership spirit through selecting a class management structure using an election system
Initial Situation and Challenges
Looking at democracy, see Indonesia with its diversity, and Indonesia elects its leaders using the ELECTION system, then education about this must reach Prawira Middle School students. Even though they are not old enough to fulfill their obligations, but education as early as possible allows them to gain meaningful experiences that they can remember when they get to their obligations. Of course, the hope of implementing the selection of class structures using an election system is that it can foster the hidden leadership spirit in students, then how all class members get involved in it and use their voting rights to elect the leader of their choice. And of course from the elected leaders they can carry out the mandate that has been entrusted to them and be responsible for the mandate given.
The challenge that occurs in the field is that I have not fully involved students in organizing this election, because this is the beginning that I gave as a prototype first to students and this is the first time, and this prototype will be used to hold the election for chairman and deputy chairman of the OSIS later in September.
Action
Steps 1: Student Education
In early rare, inform students that in selecting the class structure they will use the ELECTION method. Next, educate students about ELECTIONS, how it is implemented, why this is done, and what benefits it will have for the class.
Steps 2: Accommodate Aspirations
Furthermore, We discuss in class who will run as a candidate for chairman, secretary, and class treasurer. After obtaining the names of the candidates who will run, then the next thing is to make a publication.
Steps 3: Publication
After the student aspiration stage is completed, the process is to look for candidates for class administrators, The next step is to make a pamphlet for the chairman candidate, secretary, and class treasurer which will be published and notification of the date of the ELECTION. Then create a ballot paper for voting, rules for valid/invalid votes so that students know what kind of ballot papers are counted as valid/invalid.
Steps 4: Implementation
Implementation is done in the first week of learning. Starting with opening activities, video screening of how ELECTIONS are carried out in Indonesia and the history of the process. Then it continues with the voting session. Students are called based on the order of absence, take the ballot, Enter the booth and vote for the selected candidate. After it finishes, students put their ballots in the ballot box and it is documented. After everyone has finished voting, ballot papers are counted. The elected candidate and the previous chairman shake hands and hand over their positions. The elected chairman gave a speech to the members of his class.
(Change) Reflection on Results and Impact
After implementing the ELECTION system in the class to elect candidates for class administrators, students learn new lessons about the procedures for implementing the ELECTION, even though it is not exactly like the one held by the Indonesian KPU, because they only take things that can be applied in class. Then build the leadership spirit of class members so they have the courage to take positive action and learn to be democratic starting from inside the classroom. This is the first experience of implementing an ELECTION system in electing class administrators, Of course there are still many things that are not perfect in its implementation. Then the impact is that students appear who are not too prominent and dare to appear.
