early
The development of journaling activities at Areta Amata School Kindergarten began in the future learning from home due to the pandemic. However, this activity continues to be applied today because it is good practice in building AUD's positive character.
Efforts to instill good character values in AUD are very important for the formation of children's personalities. In character education, it is hoped that there will be a change in behavior into better behavior and for this it requires commitment from all parties so that the change in behavior can have a positive impact on affection., psychomotor and cognitive AUD. However, to give birth to better behavior, of course it must involve 3 elements viz, school, family and community (environment).
A phenomenon that occurred during the pandemic, is that teacher involvement is less than optimal, Parents find it difficult to accompany their children to study at home and children's motivation to study also decreases during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the post-pandemic phenomenon is a general phenomenon, such as a decrease in a child's motivation to learn can occur at any time, The lack of parental involvement occurs due to busy working outside the home and teacher involvement is also less than optimal due to the limited duration of study at school 3 just hours. These phenomena can have an impact on reducing discipline, responsibility, independence, social skills, and confident children. Furthermore, it can have an impact on children's honesty.
Based on these phenomena, I was moved to develop a model journaling for AUD to build AUD's positive character and be in line with the concept of independent learning, Merdeka Play which was later named the EMI Daily Journal (Effective, Tempting, Integrative) and has become good practice in my work unit.
Challenge
The challenges we face during the pandemic and post-pandemic are related to parents' commitment to being involved in assisting their children at home, it's just that the form of involvement can be different. During the pandemic, Parents are expected to accompany their children more intensively in learning to build attachment and anticipate a decline in discipline and responsibility. Meanwhile, post-pandemic or currently, Parents can be helped by teacher involvement face to face at school but when the child is at home, They are expected to be accompanied by their respective parents.
The characteristics of the parents of Areta Amata School Kindergarten students are 90 % are parents who work outside the home, which influences the intensity of parental involvement in their children at home. Thus, parental commitment is needed to be with the child, especially at the reflection stage of the activity journalingher.
Action
My Daily Journal is an activity journaling which is implemented in the form of a self-planning project for children, where children are expected to be able to recognize their own needs/wants and interests so that it is good to develop student leadership. This activity consists of a series of stages in the activity process that children must go through completely and independently according to the plan they want and is carried out as a habit in the morning., siang, afternoon to evening, until finally the positive character that you want to instill is realized. Morning journals are done at school while afternoon journals are done, afternoon and evening done at home. For this reason, teachers facilitate children by making them template journal book.
In short, at an early stage, Children observe pictures of activities, determine your needs and desires/interests and make a journal (shearing, fold and decorate). Core stages is the habit of children filling in journals that they have made by marking them using coloring tools or stickers, writing or pictures (depends on the taste of the child) on the activities he has carried out. If the child does not do the activity he chose then the child does not fill in his journal. This trains children's honesty. Furthermore presentation stage is a reflection activity by children through telling stories in front of the class, or at home with their parents. Journal reflection activities at school can be done every day or weekly, namely on Fridays, while reflection activities at home are carried out every night before bed and are expected to be in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
Change
Through making a journal, Children become trained and able to think creatively and work systematically because this journaling activity is a habituation activity, then the child's positive character is formed, especially independence, confident, responsibility and honesty. Teachers are also very helpful in assessing children's honest attitudes.
Besides that, activity journaling through the My Daily Journal model, it becomes good practice in stimulating 6 developmental aspects of AUD, ie:
– Children are able to make their own journals; develop children's independence and fine motor skills and build their artistic creativity.
– Children are able and confident in reflecting; develop children's language and social emotional skills
– Children are able to select and group activities, recognize one's own needs and interests and show creativity in solving everyday problems; develop cognitive abilities
– Children's choice of religious activities and attitudes of love for fellow creatures created by God and honesty, demonstrated by implementing it at home and at school; develop aspects of children's religious values and character.
Overall, Positive attitudes are built with the knowledge and skills acquired by children.
