I have been teaching in class V at Mawas State Elementary School for two years. What I encountered this year was not much different from last year. I found that there were still students who were slow in accepting lessons and did not read fluently. But there are also students who respond quickly and understand the material and lessons I teach. This made me feel very happy, so that it becomes a whip for me so that I can teach other students who are less responsive to be responsive and understand.
When teaching, I sometimes feel annoyed because these slow students cannot keep quiet while following the lesson. Some are running around. Someone disturbed his friend so that his friend cried. Until you end up fighting and doing other negative things. There are also students who go in and out of class without feeling the slightest guilt. But the worst thing, There was once a student who defecated in the classroom. Automatically the class becomes noisy. My concentration on teaching and other students becomes disturbed. However, I understand that a teacher's task in teaching is very noble even though it feels very difficult because they have to be patient and painstaking in all circumstances.
What I often do when dealing with students who are slow and less fluent in reading is to take a personal approach first. I make these students like friends. So that students do not feel neglected and do not feel differentiated from other students. I try to spend time after every lesson to teach reading. My way is to write short sentences on the board and tell him to write them again while reading them. I asked him to do it several times to make it smooth.
In addition to providing additional lessons, to improve students' understanding, especially those who don't pay attention to lessons and don't have the enthusiasm to learn. I use it mind–mapping. With this, students will be more enthusiastic about learning because they are trained to think critically and draw colorfully. While studying with a certain theme according to the material being taught, they can imagine with markers that they scratch in their notebooks. They looked happy with their respective works. They are also enthusiastic about making mind-mapping because they can be as creative as they want to decorate it.
Sometimes I also ask slow children to sit near me. I tell stories of people who used to have difficulty learning and were slow to read who in the end have succeeded in achieving their dreams and have become successful in their lives.. That's because they don't give up and don't get bored while studying. I do this with the aim of getting students motivated and arousing their passion for learning. I also did this many times. Maybe some people think this is trivial. But thank God, There are students I have taught several years ago who still have difficulty reading, I received news that I was already reading fluently at junior high school level. Hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of his upperclassmen and become successful in the future. Amen.
