Time gradation or we call it TENSES is one of causes that makes English is considered as the difficult subject to understand by students. Most of them will give up to learn it because they think it’s difficult and there’s much materials need to be memorized, such as: to be, verb 1 2 3, etc. It’s not easy to give students understand tenses in simple way.
Giving them some tenses formula is not the best and effective way, specially for them who don’t like English learning because they think it’s difficult to learn it. They need some simple ways as easy as they tap and slide their gadget.
In order to make them enjoy the learning, we need to know not only what they want to do, but what they like to do. It has strong relationship with their learning style. So, at first i gave them some guides and understanding about present continuous tense in simple way. I asked them to go around the school to answer my question “What are people doing outside there?”. They then went out from their class to observe some people with any kinds of activities. They had to write down in a sentence, e.g : Mr. Rudi is teaching math. By this activity, they can practice directly and understand the function of present continuous easily. When the went back into their class they present the sentences, if there’s any mistakes I guided them to correct it. Then, next step is i gave them challenge to plan about to solve their problem in understanding present continuous tense. They might make some activities and it could be related to their hobby, for example: vlog, make a story board, portfolio contains of their idols, etc. I gave them example when i went to some places while learning present continuous tense. I pretended to be a vlogger, make my own sentences while telling it on my video, edited by myself. Differentiation, one of learning strategy, they could submit their assignment in three kinds of file: audio, video, written in ppt/word/any kinds of apps they’ve mastered.
The result was really good, they improve not only their English skills, but also the other skills and creativities. They were really happy because they did the assignment based on their learning style, by their own way. They solved their problem in understanding tenses, specially present continuous tense. This challenge made them more understand what and when this tense must be used.
