As a SLB Teacher, since 2006, I am used to using SIBI (Indonesian Sign System) which I learned from the Dictionary. I even became a SIBI translator on several local TV shows. But there are three things that make me feel that something is not right.
First, every time I translate on TV and I post on my Facebook, There isn't any 1 even students or former students (alumni) who like and comment on my posts. I once asked directly, “Did you see TVRI North Sumatra yesterday?? Mrs. Ega translated using SIBI. Then why don't you like and comment on FB, mom??”. They answered “I do not understand”. Second, every one of my students speaks sign language outside of class, I always don't understand what they are talking about. Why is their sign language different from the SIBI Dictionary?, I thought. Third, Learning in the classroom is not optimal. Because my Deaf students do not understand my spoken language, and I don't understand their sign language. My students and I were having problems communicating.
Finally I found out that what my deaf students were using was Bisindo (Indonesian Sign Language). There is an opinion that Bisindo “unofficial language”, while SIBI “official language”. So as an SLB teacher, at that time, I don't study Bisindo because I think my students should study it “official language”. I, as a teacher, must teach that “Correct”. My students must learn from me. That's what I thought in the past.
After following TPN 2018, I got the enlightenment that as a Teacher who is #Free toLearn, I have to side with the students. As a teacher, I need to understand students' learning needs, I'm not even embarrassed to learn from students. SI then studied Indonesian Sign Language (Bisindo) which my students always use.
I teach my students with the principle of #AllStudentsAllTeachers. Then my students introduced me to the Gerkatin Deaf Disability Community (Welfare Movement for the Indonesian Deaf). This is also in accordance with the principle of independent learning which always prioritizes collaboration from every element of society. Finally, through direct training and mentoring with Deaf friends, Gerkatin friends recommended me to become JBI (Sign Language Interpreter). Currently I am a member of PLJ (JBI Service Center) @plj.indonesia
JBI is a profession/career that is different from my career as a teacher. I went through certain training and levels before finally becoming a JBI. Just like an English teacher who doesn't automatically become an English translator when he can memorize a dictionary. There is still a need for training and strengthening competence as an interpreter/interpreter.
At the moment, as a JBI makes me understand my students better. My communication as a teacher runs more smoothly with students, and this really helps the learning process. Students also trust me more, because indeed when learning Bisindo, I don't just learn sign language, but I also learned about Deaf Culture and their Natural Identity as Deaf Disabled. By choosing to use Bisindo, I feel like I am a more independent teacher, and especially the Teacher who sides with the Student, Pupil, Pupil. This is very proud.
