It's possible because ordinary is a 'magic sentence’ which we often hear and apply to many things, no exception in English language skills. Learning a foreign language will be difficult if you just imagine it. What makes students lazy about learning English??
One of the most influential is a lack of self-confidence. The large number of new vocabulary and sentence structures that are different from Indonesian make the average student lazy and tend to be embarrassed about taking this lesson. As long as I teach English, there are indeed some students like that phobia towards English lessons. This fear then makes them dislike. As a result, they find it difficult to master English.
At the moment, I teach English at MTsN 15 Jombang class VIII. Some of the students live in Islamic boarding schools. The background of these students is slightly different from other Madrasahs who do not live in Islamic boarding schools. In terms of speaking skills and courage to appear, they seem more embarrassed and less confident. On the other hand, Language learning, especially English as a foreign language, is learning that is not only related to cognitive, but also speaking skills.
Class VIII MTsN 15 Jombang is a regular class with an average number 32 students in one group. Class VIII is a class that is homogeneous with the background of students who live in Islamic boarding schools. Socially, They are grouped into two dormitories, namely boys and girls. This makes them not used to appearing in front of the opposite sex. They seem embarrassed when they have to appear in front of the class. This is certainly a problem that must be sought for alternative solutions so that learning can be in accordance with the learning objectives that have been formulated.
One of the basic competencies taught in class VIII is recount text. Recount text is text that explains events that occurred in the past. This material requires students' speaking skills, especially telling about their past experiences. This is a challenge for me to achieve the learning objectives in this recount text.
Some class VIII experienced difficulties in telling their experiences in English. This can be seen when they appear in front of the class, they look nervous and stutter. Even some of them have not shown the courage to perform in front of the class. Then I took the initiative to use media digital as an alternative media, namely video blogs (vlog) as a medium that they can use to tell their experiences in English.
In learning at Madrasah, Students are not permitted to bring cellphones. As a teacher who teaches 'millennial students', I made the decision to use a cellphone during English lessons regarding recount text. I ask students to bring cellphones, but with several provisions according to Madrasah rules. After completing learning, they have to collect their cellphones and take them back when they go home. This is to minimize misuse when using cellphones.
Learning begins with determining a theme. Each student determines the theme to be told. They should choose some theme like holidays, childhood experiences, or a happy experience. After determining the theme, they make mind mapping according to each story. From mapping which has been made, then they develop it in paragraph form. Then students choose a background for vlogging, namely an interesting and good place to take video blogging, Of course, after I have curated the text. I invited them to leave the classroom and go to the Madrasah yard which had several interesting spots for recording. Students are welcome to take the most comfortable place for them to do video blogging.
In video blogging activities, Students work in groups to help each other in turn. They were given time 60 minutes to complete the task of creating a vlog, then they returned to class to collect the results of the video blogging they had made. As a follow-up activity, I give the students a task to make video blogging text material recount individually as a project assignment.
During video blogging activities, I accompany students and help them if there are problems. I accompanied them and asked whether video bogging was challenging and fun? Students answered that they were very happy with the video blogging activity. They really enjoy the learning process and are enthusiastic about creating video blogging content with themes of their own choice.
Utilization of media video blogging (Vlog) provide quite a significant impact. First, students' interest in learning increases. This can be seen from the learning process of students who are very enthusiastic and enthusiastic about making video blogging.
Second, Pupils' speaking skills improve. This can be seen from their confidence in the results video blogging which they do. The complexity of telling stories using English in front of the camera is very different when they tell stories in front of the class. Students no longer look embarrassed, On the contrary, they are very brave in expressing the chronology of their respective stories.
Third, student learning outcomes on text material recount increased. All students have completed their studies, especially in text material recount, achieve Minimum Completion Criteria. This certainly makes them very happy because they have succeeded and completed their studies.
In media development digital video blogging This, There are several things that need to be considered, especially in terms of planning and time management. Teachers must plan activities carefully video blogging. This will greatly influence the learning process activities and learning success. Besides that, The teacher must also determine the right time for the activity. This time efficiency really determines how the project can be completed on time.
Let's learn English happily. Make a Vlog in English, fun isn't it??
